How We Test
Our methodology is designed to be repeatable, transparent, and relevant to real family life. We combine controlled measurements with scenario-based trials so results translate to your home, not just our lab.
Test Environment and Setup • Controlled baseline: We measure background noise first, then test devices at fixed distances, including at-crib distance, with consistent placement outside the crib. • Standardized settings: We document sound type, volume step, and any light or timer settings used. Each product is tested across multiple volume steps. • Safety context: We focus on the lowest effective volumes for masking common noises while staying within conservative ranges.
Measurements We Take • SPL at distance: A-weighted and unweighted readings across volume steps to map practical ranges. • Frequency character: We note low-, mid-, and high-frequency tendencies that affect masking (e.g., traffic vs. sibling play). • Loop and artifact analysis: We identify loop length, check for audible gaps, clicks, or tonal build-up. • Self-noise and hiss: We listen and measure for internal noise that can become fatiguing in quiet rooms.
Real-World Trials • Nursery: Overnight checks for consistency, light control, and restart behavior after power loss. • Shared rooms: Masking mid/high-frequency bursts (voices, toys) without pushing unsafe volumes. • Apartments/traffic: Low-frequency masking performance at conservative settings. • Travel/daycare: Portability, battery stamina or USB-C use, durability, and sound consistency across spaces.
Usability and Reliability • Volume precision: Granularity of steps and ability to fine-tune. • Memory and recovery: Remembers last settings; immediate, artifact-free restart. • Controls in the dark: Tactile buttons and light dimming. • Build and safety: Stable footprint, secure cords, and heat considerations.
Scoring and Recommendations We score within context (nursery, shared room, travel, etc.). A product may excel in one scenario and not another; our picks reflect those differences with clear trade-offs and alternatives.
Limitations and Notes Every room is different. Furniture, surfaces, and background noise change outcomes. Use our guidance as a starting point, keep devices outside the crib, and consult your pediatrician for individualized advice.
Continuous Improvement We revisit our methods as new research, devices, and reader feedback emerge. When we update tests or scores, we note what changed and why.
